Chapter 25-33 ( pg 157-217) Monday, February 16

Summary--------
Phoebe and Sal had dinner @ the Finney's and discovered that Phoebe has an issue with eating cholesterol. She stayed @ Sal's that night and expected her to give her the best she had b/c that's what guests deserve... the best.. That upset Sal.
Phoebe's mother had just finally called. Not their house, but Margaret's saying she was okay, but no more than that.
Phoebe presented her project on Pandora... Hope was inside the box.
Sal and her grandparents went to The Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, and Yellowstone...
Mr. Birkway read a poem " The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls" (about a tide coming in )and the way it affected Phoebe and Sal was unreal.

The tide rise, the tide falls
A traveler is hurrying toward a town,
And it's getting darker and darker,
And the sea calls to the traveler.
Then the waves with their soft, white hands
Wash out the traveler's footprints.
The next morning,
The day returns, but nevermore
Returns the traveler to the shore,
And the tide rises, the tide falls

The girls called this a story of murder and are they right?
They also found out that Mrs. Cadaver is Mr. Birkway's sister. Mrs. Partridge is their mother.

Phoebe became so worried about her mother, that she went to the police station. She presented the messages to the officer...

Don't judge a man until you've walked to moons in his moccasin's.

Everyone has his own agenda.

In the course of a lifetime, what does it matter?

You can't keep the birds of sadness from flying over your head, but you can keep them from nesting in your hair.
They find that the lunatic was the officer's son.
They broke into Mrs. Partridge's house to try and find evidence of Phoebe's mother's missing.

The next day when Phoebe came to school, she had another message..

We never know the worth of water until the well is dry.
Mr. Birkway shared some journals with the class and when he read Phoebe's he was worried about the way she thought of his sister. She thought she murdered her husband.
Reflection/ Response-------------

Phoebe reacts the same way that Sal did when her mother left and has become a very ornery person. Will it go away? Will her mother return? They know that she is okay b/c she called Margaret, but why wouldn't she call her own family? Phoebe and Sal are very worried about Mrs. Winterbottom, but i think that Sal helps her in hopes that if she does, she will find her mother too. The places they go and the things they see cause them to believe that others have something to do with Mrs. Winterbottom's disappearance... For example Mrs. Cadaver.. And does she?

She's still traveling to be with her mother and as the story she tells her grandparents thinkens, she gets closer to her mother and everything ties together and causes her to remember everything that happened with her and her family. Her mother wrote to her from these places that her and her grandparents visited and she can feel her mother's presence and see what she saw when she was there too. She 's so close to her. The messages that have been sent make Sal think. What's their purpose? Does it have anything to do with their mothers' disappearances?

The girls' daily activities like the poem and the way they look @ things is something that they put into everythingthey do... Hope and the way that affects the girls in hoping their mothers will return is very significant.

chapter 18-25 ( pg. 107-157) Sat. February 14th

Summary------
for the first time in this book, she mentions what a good man her father is. He did so much to make her mother feel like the most important woman in the world, but him being so perfect made her feel worthless to him in her mind. And she explains that her mother left b/c of some things, but she couldn't explain.
Phoebe saw the lunatic and ran home to find the door locked, but when her mother answered it, she couldn't explain why it was locked in the first place. Something was very wierd. Soon after, her mother left a note on the kitchen table that said
Keep all the doors locked and call your father if you need anything. I love you, Phoebe.
Mom
Prudence also recieved a letter from their mother that told her to cook.. they expected her to be gone for awhile, but back soon, and their father got one that said she had to go away and she couldn't explain why. They all became very worried then.
Phoebe was panicking and made up excuses for why she had to stay home.. She made any accusation about what happened to her mother that she could just to be there when she came home, but her father allowed her to go to school and told her that her mother was not a bird that they could cage up.. she was free to do what she wanted.
Sal told of her mother being pregnant and losing the baby so that she couldn't have anymore children. She was broken then and became very lost without the oppurtunity to do with a child as she desired. She remembered all of this when she went to the Badlands. He mother worte her there.
When they left there, Sal returned to her story and she explained that soon after her mother missing, Phoebe found another message. It said,

You can't keep the birds of sadness from flying over your head, but you can keep them from nesting in your hair.

People kept asking her about her mother and when she was coming home, but it being such a stressful day.. she stayed with Sal.

Response/Reflection------------

Is Phoebe's feeling the same way Sal's mother felt?
Her mother is doing the same thing that Sal's mother did and that seems that they could end up in the same situation, but will it?
Why would she leave without any words of why?
Phoebe is feeling very empty without her mother and Sal is doing her best to keep her on the up and up, but when she tries Phoebe just tries to fix it and do her best to bring her mother back.

Who are these messages really meant for and what do they mean?

chapter 11- 18( pg. 58-107) 2/10/09

Summary-----------
Sal discovered that any time someone would touch her, she would flinch. She suspects it's from not being the huggy family they used to be and it made her feel lonesome.
She adores her grandparents and they told her about their marriage bed, When they married, they had a bed that all of her grandfather's siblings had been born in that bed and all of their children had been born in that bed... He wants to die in that bed and feels that nothing or anyone knows more about him than that bed.
On pg. 60 there is another message on the Winterbottom's steps that said Everyone has his own agenda. They all begin to freak out and wonder where these messages are coming from... No one @ the door; no evidence of who sent them. Is it a prank? and who would do this?
She speaks more now of her teacher Mr. Birkway and his passion for English.. The journals they had to write that he read and many other weird elements of himself.
Her grandmother gets bitten by a water moccasin and a boy that was there sucked the venom out of her leg and she had to go to the hospital and was released the next morning.
When Sal was little, she remembers a tree that had a bird in it, but after she stared @ it for so long, it sounded like the tree itself was singing.
Another message was left on the door step... In the course of a lifetime, what does it matter? But Sal feels that after she read this.. . if you lost your mother, it would matter.
Response/reflection----------
These messages are very erie and no one knows who is sending them... Why do they do this and what is the reason for it... Is it a message for Sal to do something or is it saying that someone is in trouble? (Everyone has his own agenda.....In the course of a lifetime, what does it matter? )
Sal feels very alone. She misses her family being whole and wishes that as Phoebe's family is, her family could be too. She flinches... How long has it been since she has been given a hug? Why did things change so drastically? Is she really this alone?
The marraige bed was an important thing to her grandfather. He has mentioned it many times so far, and maybe he will die in it in this story. That would have been his wish, but they don't desire to bed any other bed either. Very important in their culture to stick to their grounds.
Sal's grandma was bitten by a snake and the boy sucked out the venom... He met Sal @ the hospital and felt the need to be there until he knew that her grandmother was well.

pg. 1-56 ( chapter 1-11) 2-09-09

Summary----------
Sal is the main character. She has lived in Bybanks, Kentucky for most of her life. she is 13 yrs. old and her mother left her father, so she is very alone without her mom and doesn't know how to take it. She goes with her Gramps and Gram( her father's parents) to find her, so they can reunite. On the way, she begins to tell her grandparents a story of how this adventure went with a girl named Phoebe and how them meeting each other brought their stories together.
The day they moved to Euclid was when she met Phoebe at school. After they became friends and knew each other well, Phoebe had invited Sal to her house where they shared their thoughts on Margaret.
They stop here and there when they stop their travel or have something they need to do, like input. But when the story stops, something else is going on @ that time.Phoebe told Sal that she suspected that Margaret killed her husband.. that made her feel unsure about her and her father from then.
Sal has flashbacks of what was good when her mother was with them and she feels lonesome without her, but she also feels that she gets closer and closer to her all the time.
she can't wait to see her again.
on page 51 is the 1st reference to the title... The message on the Winterbottoms' doorstep, Don't judge a man until you've walked two moons in his moccasins. They don't know where these are coming from or from whom the are being sent, but they know that whoever they are supposed to go to, it is a message for them. The call this boy the lunatic and they see him often, but is it him sending the messages?
Reflection/response-----------------------
Sal's story hasn't quite come all together yet b/c it's a story from the past, but may have also something to do with finding her mother. She takes her grandparents w/ her through the adventure and tells them this story of how her's and Phoebe's stories come in close quarters. The time spent w/ Phoebe has affected the way she tells her story and looks @ this adventure w/ her grandparents. The message Don't judge a man until you've walked two moons in his moccasins that appeared on Phoebe's door step, is the 1st reference to the title of the book, and is one that will probably effect the way the story is told now from then to the end. Something with finding her mother is something that she feels will help her find herself. She cannot help but remember her mother and everything they did b/c she then had only happy memories and desires them back.

chapter 15

Summary------
He called Sally Hayes and they planned to go to a matinee. He hates the word grand. When he went to Grand Central Station he saw 2 nuns w/ bad suitcases.. he felt bad for them and their breakfast. He gave them 10 bucks for his contribution and they spoke of Romeo and Juliet. The nuns loved it, but when they were leaving, he blew smoke in their face.. he didn't mean to, but he felt soo bad for it. Holden Vitamin Caulfield- light eater... healthy vitamins...etc.
Reflection-------
Holden never thought a bad thing about these nuns when he saw them. He treated them wonderfully even though he was atheist and didn't insult their religion or anything. He finally got to talk to someone about his interests... and they cared to know. It seemed as if that made his day. W/o intending... he blew smoke in their faces, but he appologized and everyone seemed as there were no hard feelings.

chapter 14

Summary------
Sunny had just left. Holden spoke of Allie again and how he talks to him when he's depressed because he wishes he would have let him go with  them that day on his bike. Soon after Sunny left; she arrived with Maurice. They demanded more money( 5 bucks) from him and when he wouldn't give it to them, Maurice beat him up good. They got their 5 bucks and Holden was angry, but rested anyway.
Reflection-------
Holden still speaks of Allie and how it hurts him that he's gone, but he also says a lot about how angry he is and how depressed he is. He is very emotionally unstable. Sunny and Maurice seem to be be scheming against Holden just to get his money... They think he is upper class. He fought for his rights and still took the punch and didn't run away from his problem. He's such a good guy. Big heart.
